These questions and their responses are printed here in response to common questions and problems encountered while using UpFront.
Further information can be found in the manuals and on-line documentation, supplied with the product.
Problems Displaying GUI Mode
Q. When I start UpFront I am not seeing a GUI Interface.
A. UpFront can only display frs applications as GUI if the environment variable TERM_INGRES is correctly defined. A Termcap entry called m0 is supplied with INGRES, and can be used by entering the command 'setenv TERM_INGRES m0' (the exact command will vary depending on your platform and environment).
Once you have UpFront up and running using m0 we recommend you try using some special termcap entries and mapfiles written specifically for UpFront.
For further information on this please see the keymapping guide in the UpFront/docs directory.
Q. I have set TERM_INGRES to m0 or one of the recommended terminal types yet I still don't see a GUI interface.
A. This is most likely because the value of TERM_INGRES is being reset. The value of TERM_INGRES is most likely being reset by either a shell script or .com file that starts your application, or by a login script such as a .cshrc, .profile file. To Solve this simply remove the TERM_INGRES entry from the login or application script.
The value of TERM_INGRES in the local environment should override the setting in the INGRES environment specified by ingsetenv and ingprenv.
If you have problems setting the TERM_INGRES environment variable please consult the INGRES DBA guide.
Connection Problems
Q. I am having problems connecting to the host machine, even though I have TCP/IP installed. What can I do?
A. UpFront requires a compatible version of winsock version 1.1 or greater to function, please check that you have a correct version of winsock and that this is in your path. Winsock should live under the windows/system directory.
If you have a version elsewhere on your machine then please consult technical advice.
If you have multiple versions of winsock.dll installed on your machine then make sure all of the versions of winsock are needed. If they are then make sure the winsock 1.1 version comes first in your path.
Network Installation
Q. Can I install UpFront on a Network File Server?
A. Yes this is possible. Copy the UpFront disk images onto a file server and install client machines from there, by setup.
Q. Can I run UpFront from a single network installation?
A. Yes, this is also possible. In this case the UpFront product is not installed on the local PC. Instead the UpFront installation is shared from a network drive. To achieve this kind of installation install UpFront on the network drive and create shortcut links to the installation from the client machines. Make sure the command line and path is correct i.e. X:UpFront.exe -file editor.out. If have done this kind of installation then please make sure all of the client machines access UpFront using the same drive letter. If you do not do this then edits made to the application may not work as paths will vary from machine to machine and so on.
Q. I am trying to use UpFront from a single network installation and the font size is too big, when I start my application.
A. If you are using some of the ALEX fonts supplied with UpFront then sometimes fonts may appear wrongly. The reason for this is that the ALEX fonts may not be installed on your machine. To install the Alex fonts either install the product on the client machine or just install the fonts themselves. To do this go into the windows control and select fonts. Then select Browse and browse the UpFront directory and select the ALEX fonts for installation. The ALEX fonts reside in the UpFront root directory.
Performance Problems in Tablefields
Q. When using UpFront performance seems to rapidly deteriorate when navigating tablefields, is there anything that can be done?
A. In the Past this has been a problem, for potential users of UpFront. However we are now pleased to say that a patch is available from Computer Associates to help performance in tablefields. The patch is available for Ingres version 6.4/06 and above, please contact your CA representative for further information.
Q. ReadOnly fields do no work properly.
A. Again please contact your CA representative for the relavant Ingres patch.
Windows NT
Q. Does upfront run on windows NT?
A. Yes, there are no problems running UpFront on Windows NT.
Q. Does UpFront Support OpenIngres on Windows NT?
A. Yes, use UpFront as normal (making sure you have updated the termcap and keyboard mapping files.) You may also need NTTelnetFix=1 in the application section of your upfront.ini file. You will also need an appropriate telnet daemon.
Please Note:
There are numerous versions of telnet daemons available for NT.
Please check with CACI or Computer Associates to see which telnet daemon for NT is supported.
It is important to note that the telnet daemon used be set to the most basic login mode available. For example the default mode in Pragma System's Internetd Sever is console mode, which will not work with upfront. The most basic login mode in Pragma's Internetd for this product is stream mode and this setting should be used with upfront.
Toolbar Problems
Q. I have created a toolbar but when I enter the form upon which it is attached it still isn't displayed. What have I done?
A. When you have applied a toolbar to a form, please make sure that you have changed the default appearance for the form to toolbar. This can be done be entering Form_Properties and then selecting Form_display or Popup_Form and changing the relevant dialogue.
This process can also be done at a global level from the UpFront setup dialogs.
Please consult the toolbar manual supplied with the product for further details.
UpGrading from 1.2 to 1.8
Q. I am upgrading from UpFront Classic (version 1.2) to the 1.8 version of UpFront and appear to have lost the buttons that I used to have at the bottom of the screen. What has happened?
A. These buttons are known as FRS menu buttons and can easily be reapplied to your application.
To redisplay the FRS Menu buttons that have disappeared, please go into the UpFront setup dialogues.
To reapply the buttons, start UpFront and then select on file, open your application and then click on the button on the right hand side of the screen that says Form_Display.
Once in this screen uncheck the default appearance box and select FRS Menu buttons and decide whether to display the buttons at the top or bottom of the screen. You will have to go through the same process for Popup_Forms by clicking on the relevant tab on the right hand side of the screen.
Once you have done this save the application. The FRS buttons will re-appear, when you restart the application.
Q. I have upgraded to version 1.80 from 1.2 and my fields and trim appear out of alignment. What can I do?
A. If you upgrade to 1.8 and also find that your fields and trim are out of alignment, we also recommend you to do the following:
1) click on the upfront icon and select open application. (so you go into the application setup dialogs). 2) click on the appearance button on the right hand side of the screen. 3) select the use old font calculation checkbox. 4) restart your application.
Alternately you could try using proportional fonts. Please see the documentation for this feature.

Q. I have changed from using word6 and word97, but my macro has stopped working?
A. Word97 uses a different programming language to previous versions of word, you will need to change update your macro code accordingly.
