Foboz - Search Engine selection criteria |
|
The Foboz - Meta Search Engine uses hundreds of search engines to provide you with a vast web searching system. So what makes this better than simply relying on a few general web search engines like Google or Yahoo? and what search engines are selected for inclusion into Foboz?
The main problem with general search engines is that they have a commercial imperative to show sponsered/paid for links first and foremost.
Secondly they are after all general, whereas quite often your searches are specific. If you want to search on say a scientific subject you are more likely to get high quality results by searching for terms on selected high quality science orientated sites, than by a shotgun approach on the web as a whole.
So how does a site get listed on Foboz?
First off we will not list:
- Hate sites. we may list sites in urgent need of mental health care, but hate sitesare in our experience quite distinctive and will not be listed. If you feel we have slipped up and with hundreds of search engines it is always possible then contact support@marsjupiter.com.
- Popup crazy sites especially those trying to force downloads onto your PC. Note the word crazy here though, excessive popups (okay we and you feel 1 popup is excessive, but you know what we mean) are a fact of life these days. Try getting a browser like Firebird that will block popups.
- Sites where the search facilities are not suited to keyword searching. We could like geneology sites for example, but this would be at the expense of you getting good results out of these sites which require a complex set of data to be entered in order to get the best results.
- Sites where you always need to pay to actually view the content. Note that some sites results are a mix of subscriber and non-subscriber access and we deal with these on a case by case basis.
- Very unreliable sites. Our testing suggests that due to the erratic nature of the web, about 3% - 5% of searches will fail. The site may be temporarily down, overload, or your ISP's routine to the site may be tempermental. But some sites are simply generally in a state of disrepair or overload, and there is no point in listing the former or contributing to the latter.
We will list:
- That have substantial content in a Foboz category.
- Shopping sites that are considered reputable.
- Sites from across the political spectrum. The news and current events coverage of the major web portals is lamentably tame. We hope out news and current events category will give you a far more balanced view of world events.
- Sites with overlapping content with other listed engines. You can always move engines down the "priority" list or choose how many engines you want to search.
- Sites that need a new Foboz category.
- Sites that are individual efforts rather than those of organisations. There are some remarkably long standing, good individually run web sites and we see no reason to be biased.
If you know of a site you think we should add, contact support@marsjupiter.com
