It is important to realise that a family mode in a product, is not a substitute for adaquate parental supervision. If a child wants to bypass the family mode in Callisto, it is easily done, they don't use Callisto, they use another newsreader!
However within the confines of Callisto, the family mode will filter about 99% of adult content.
Callisto filters at three levels.
Newsgroups<
newgroups are filtered according to our censoring dictionary. This scores words with the following values:
| 0 |
safe |
| 1 |
low |
| 2 |
medium |
| 3 |
high |
| 4 |
block |
If a newsgroup scores 4 or more it is barred. We include "alt" as a word to contribute towards the more unregulated nature of the alt hierarchy.
Subjects
Subject titles are treated in the same manner a newsgroups.
Subject Bodies
Subject bodies are scored according to the censorship dictionary, but due the length of article bodies it is not simply a matter of "4 strikes and out" , but an algorithm taking into account the length of text.
Customisation
The user can edit/add/remove and set the levels of all words in the censorship dictionary.
ConclusionNo filtering system is perfect, they will always either censor too much or too little. We think our does a pretty fine job, whilst also have the benefit of being transparent in operation. You can easily understand why things are filtered (or not) and change it if you feel the need.
