Alex example programs
marsjupiter1.jpg

Apart from front-ending Ingres FRS, UpFront can be used to run your own programs written in the Alex programming language. Examples provided with UpFront are "login.at" which provides a graphical login for UpFront and "print.at" which is a print server for UpFront. Here are some more:-

icon.zip - Some icons used by the example programs.

bat19016.zip - 16 bit version of the Alex compiler. Whilst Alex source files are identical for 16/32bit the compiled ".out" files are not. Hence you must use the 16bit compiler if you are running 16bit UpFront.

bat19032.zip - 32 bit version of the Alex compiler for UpFront 1.90.

bat20032.zip - 32 bit version of the Alex compiler for UpFront 2.00.

alex.at - A graphical front end to the Alex compiler.

nettest.at - The source to the network test program supplied with UpFront. This is a good place to start as with incredibly few lines a whole variety of network operations are available, including a terminal emulator.

finger.at - The source to a finger program that stores the addresses fingered.

mfinger.at - The source to a multiple document interface finger program that stores the addresses fingered. This program demonstrate

idfinger.at - One for the Quake fans. Does a finger on idsoftware.com to pick up the users and then allows you to see their individual plans. It can also highlight the plans that have been updated since your last check. A nice example of a short program that does quite a lot!

clipper.at - Handy program that keeps the last 10 text entries to the windows clipboard. These can be viewed and edited and the displayed entry is made the current contents.

qcard.at - Code to illustrate the use of dialogs. When you "Show" a form it displays and then the program will carry on through the following lines of code, with a dialog you want an immediate answer before going onto the next line.

Note that these programs are unsupported. As a quick guide you would compile the program "alex.at" as follows:-

bat -o alex.out alex.at 0

The "0" on the end tell the compiler that is is being run from the command line, errors will go to the batlog.txt file. Having compiled alex.at which is the GUI frontend to the Alex bat.exe compiler. You can run it as follows:-

upfront -file alex.out

This will put you in the easy to use compiler front end.
